Sisters of Hope - A Reusable Pad Project
Did you know?
40% of Indian women ages 15-24 have no access to sanitary products during their period.
82% of women use rags, old clothes, newspapers, hay, sand or even ash, which can easily result in infections.
71% of girls don’t even have knowledge of menstruation before their first period.
Due to lack of sanitary supplies and facilities and infrastructure at schools, many girls will permanently drop out of school because of their periods.
Beyond that, women are shunned during their period, not allowed to enter many public places and are told that because of their period they are unclean and less than.
That is not okay with us!
As women, we are not willing to stand aside and let our sisters in India believe that they are anything less than beautiful. Instead, by putting a simple reusable sanitary kit in their hands and teaching them how to use it, we can empower them to be all they they were made to be and feel good doing it.
What are we doing about it?
Introducing the Sister of Hope Reusable Pad Project.
Each Reusable Sanitary Pad Kit includes:
2 Shields - waterproof so that they will last
8 Absorbent Liners - bright colors to hide stains and shaped like a wash cloth so that they can be cleaned and dried without embarrassment
2 Panties - many girls do not wear panties at the age when they would start their period
1 Small Soap - to properly sanitize materials
1 Washcloth - personal hygiene
2 Gallon Bags - for storage and cleaning
1 Period Chart & Instruction
1 Drawstring Bag
How to Get Involved
Sisters of Hope is volunteer led! Our volunteers made and assemble kits in the US and send them to India where the Asha Project team does training and distributes kits. There are lots of ways to volunteer and be a part of Sisters of Hope:
Donations - supplies needed for making and assembling kits
Sponsor a Reusable Sanitary Kit for $15
Attend a ‘Create!’ day where women of all ages and skill levels can help create and package kits
Be a Master Creator - learn how to stitch shields, inserts and/or bags and work on them from home
Become a Sisters of Hope Ambassador - join our team to help coordinate ‘Create!’ days or start new groups of Sisters of Hop in your community
